This is the largest open-air market in Kenya which is situated near the Machakos Bus Station. It specialises in mitumba, or second hand clothes, but also sells fresh fruit, vegetables, meat, and household items. The market is open throughout the week but its lively on Saturday. Mitumba traders in Nairobi and other towns get their supplies from Gikomba market, Toi market or Kawangware but Gikomba is the most popular. People either buy goods on bales or one will buy for personal use. Best market time is in the morning. If you go in the evening you will buy cheap products but mostly those rejected by other buyers who selected quality products in the morning.
The best days to go to Gikomba market is during week days. Normally, over the weekend prices of commodities are high because there are many people at the market to buy products, but during the week there are few people buying the products.
For a trader who wants to buy the best products, the best time to visit Gikomba is during morning hours, precisely between 4 am and 8 am. During this time, most bales have not been opened and you will be the first one to select the best.
